Stephen Schiffer (B.A. Pennsylvania, 1962; D.Phil. Oxford, 1970) is Silver Professor of Philosophy at New York University, where he has taught since 1996. Before that he held positions at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, the University of Arizona, the University of Southern California, and the University of California at Berkeley. In fall semester 1990 he was Old Dominion Humanities Professor at Princeton University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Schiffer has published articles in several areas of philosophy, but most of his work has been on linguistic and mental representation. His main current project is about how vagueness affects meaning.
